The use of the tassel (and its status) on the school caps appears to have changed over time. So far the story appears to look like this

Pre 1951. (Inputs from Michael Boon)
Sub-prefect - braid on either side of front panel
Prefect - braid along all panels
Colours - tassel for rugby, alternate white panels for cricket and nothing for athletics

About 1951 to 1959 (inputs from John Bradbury)
Sub-prefect - braid on either side of front panel
Prefect - braid along all panels
Colours (I believe all sports) - tassel (only had braid if prefect / sub prefect)

It then changed about 1959-60 (inputs from John Bradbury)
Sub-prefect - full braid (as per prefect before)
Prefect - full braid plus tassel
Colours - small rectangular badge (RFC, CC, AC) above school badge on blazer.

The pre 1948 cap for a prefect with both cricket and rugby colours must have been quite a sight.

What happened when the school moved to co-educational?
